Q1. What are the new features of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL 5)? |
A1. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and Advanced Platform encompass more than 1200 components, and include technology developed by Red Hat in collaboration with customers and partners—including performance and security enhancements enabled by HP, and the open source community. New functionality adds standards-based virtualization, greater security, better manageability, higher performance, scalability for both 32- and 64-bit scale-up and scale-out workloads, desktop enhancements, and more.
|
|
Q2. When will RHEL5 be supported on HP Integrity servers? |
A2. Both the RHEL 5 base and Advanced Platform products are orderable and supported across the HP Integrity server family. Please see www.hp.com/go/lxintegritycert for the latest Linux on Integrity server support and certification information.
|
|
| Q3. What are the new Red Hat Enterprise Linux server products? |
A3. There are still two server variants, both based on the same core technology (kernel, libraries, tool chain, applications, utilities, etc) to ensure that OEM and ISV certifications apply to both variants equally. However, the mainstream high volume server, Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform includes technical capabilities beyond the base product, Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform is designed for mainstream customers. It provides extensive server and storage virtualization capabilities, and supports servers of any size. The storage virtualization capabilities are provided by the inclusion of Red Hat Global File System and Red Hat Cluster Suite technologies. In combination with the ability to host an unlimited number of virtualized guest operating systems, Advanced Platform provides the most flexible and scalable environment on the market today.
- The second server product, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, is the foundation on which Advanced Platform is built. It is suitable for small systems, supporting servers with up to 2 processor sockets. It includes server virtualization capabilities, and its subscriptions provide support for up to 4 virtualized guest environments.
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform is priced the same as the previous AS product. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 is priced the same as the previous ES product. Upon subscription renewal, ES customers will be transitioned to RHEL 5, and AS customers will be upgraded to Advanced Platform.

GFS is also available from HP as a bundle with Serviceguard for Linux . Customers can also obtain GFS and Cluster Suite through SLMS. |
| Q6. How does Red Hat refer to sockets? |
| A6: Socket count refers to the maximum server capacity, not the number of occupied sockets. A socket may contain multi-core and/or multi-thread processors. |

| Virtualization |
| Q1. What exactly is server virtualization? |
| A1. Server virtualization software allows a single physical system to run multiple, separate operating systems and their applications. The underlying virtualization software that is deployed on the server is called the host. The multiple operating systems that run in the virtualized environment provided by the host are called guests. A new virtual server can be created in a matter of seconds. Many different configurations are possible. Virtualization dramatically enhances the value of the server due to its ability to reduce IT costs through consolidation and increase IT flexibility and responsiveness. |
| Q2. What virtualization technologies runs on HP Integrity servers? |
| A2. Both HP Integrity Virtual Machines and the RHEL 5 server virtualization capabilities are virtualization technologies that enable you to create multiple virtual servers or machines within a single HP Integrity server. |
| Q3. What is HP Integrity Virtual Machines (Integrity VM) and what versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux does it support as a guest OS? |
| A3. HP Integrity Virtual Machines (Integrity VM), is a soft partitioning and virtualization technology within HP's Virtual Server Environment, that enables you to create multiple virtual servers or machines within a single HP Integrity server or nPartition. Integrity VM supports RHEL 4.4 and RHEL 4.5 as a guest OS. OS guest support for RHEL 5 planned to be available in the future. For more information see www.hp.com/go/integrityvm |
| Q4. Does Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 include virtualization? |
| A4. Yes. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 product includes server virtualization capabilities with support for both para- and full virtualization. Every existing Red Hat Enterprise Linux customer can update to version 5 and use virtualization immediately for no additional charge. A number of management tools are provided, and Red Hat Network has been enhanced to understand and manage virtualized environments. Several Red Hat white papers are available that describe how customers can benefit from virtualized environments. See the Red Hat website for these whitepapers and additional information. |
| Q5. Is virtualization available for the HP Integrity servers? |
| A5. The RHEL 5.1 update includes the completion of virtualization support on Intel® Itanium® processor-based platforms. HP endorses the use of this virtualization technology for those customers interested in early deployments. HP's recommended reading for customers seeking to use the virtualization technology includes Red Hat's RHEL 5.1 documentation (release notes, installation and virtualization guides) and HP Integrity RHEL 5.1 support notes. These documents will cover feature updates, known issues, and minimum and maximum configuration limits for RHEL 5.1 virtualization on HP Integrity servers. |
