HP-UX 11i v3 Update 3: Greater protection

Enhanced disaster recovery for Oracle RAC and GiCAP, enhanced security
Content starts here
Continuous availability requires mitigating risk – risk from disasters than can destroy data centres and risk from intruders accessing valuable data.
HP-UX 11i v3 Update 3 reduces your risk with even greater protection in the areas of disaster recovery and data security.

Disaster recovery at its best: Metrocluster for Oracle RAC

You invest in Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) because your business relies on continuous availability of your data.
HP now offers enhancements to its long-proven disaster-tolerant solution HP Metrocluster – featuring automated fail-over between clusters up to 300 km apart, especially for Oracle RAC.
HP’s solution for worry-free Oracle RAC installations maximises your investment:
  • Improved ROI through fully utilised servers with active/active configuration of databases at both sites
  • Database stacking for maximum utilisation
  • Reduced disaster recovery application investment – Metrocluster for Oracle RAC works for Oracle 10g RAC as well as for other applications
Metrocluster for Oracle RAC is fully integrated into the Serviceguard portfolio of products and fully supported by HP, Oracle and Symantec.
Achieve the highest levels of data protection and seamless worry-free failover:
  • Fully automated, bi-directional failover
  • No performance degradation due to distances
  • Added I/O checks for data integrity
  • Ability to failover all RAC instances at the same time

Metrocluster for Oracle RAC expands HP’s offering solution-specific high availability and disaster tolerance configurations, including the following:

Up to 1/3 configuration cost savings with Instant Capacity (GiCAP)

With HP-UX 11i v3 Update 3, HP enhances Global Instant Capacity (GiCAP) version 9, increasing the robustness of disaster recovery solutions with active/standby management capability.
GiCAP, part of the HP iCAP programme, can lower the acquisition price for disaster recovery for Superdome-class servers by up to 33%*. With GiCAP, you can run with a lower-cost configuration on one of the two sites until recovery is required, at which time GiCAP brings online the resources needed to keep your applications and data available without interruption. GiCAP is compatible with the HP Serviceguard family of high availability and disaster recovery solutions.
*Comparing what it would cost to have 2 fully configured Superdomes to the cost of having one minimally configured and one fully configured Superdome.

Enhanced data security, built-in

You can rely on HP-UX 11i v3 for maximum protection of systems, identity and data, for no additional cost for the software.
What is that worth? Phishing attacks in the US alone rose in 2007 well beyond the US billion-dollar mark.
  • Isolation improves security: for that, HP-UX 11i delivers Secure Resource Partitions (SRP), for managing secure application consolidation on a single OS platform. Version 2 simplifies administration.
  • Two-factor authentication: HP-UX 11i is the only major operating system to include a complete One Time Password (OTP) based two-factor authentication solution to consolidate and strengthen enterprise authentication for compliance and security.
The value of "built-in" in this case can be up to US$250,000 – the cost of purchasing a 3rd party product to provide 2-factor authentication on other vendors’ platforms. The HP solution consists of products that ship with the HP-UX 11i v3 Base Operating Environment (AAA RADIUS Server, PAM_RADIUS and Apache mod_auth_RADIUSx).
Consolidate and strengthen enterprise authentication for compliance and security, with flexibility:
  • Can be applied on top of existing password based infrastructure
  • Works with RADIUS enabled devices and application software, including VPN Gateways, WLAN access devices, Web services and Unix/Linux authentication.
FIPS 140-2 libraries help you meet Federal Information Processing Standards when you build your FIPS 140-2 applications on HP-UX, saving you the time and aggravation of having to certify your own OpenSSL libraries
HP-UX 11i v3 is in evaluation for an additional Common Criteria certification against a new CCOPP-OS protection profile. This profile specifies an extended range of protection requirements for vital partitioning functions, namely compartments with mandatory access controls, vPars and nPars. This is in addition to the already certified HP-UX 11i v3 under the CAPP/RBAC protection profiles.

Oracle applauds HP on the new updates to the HP-UX 11i v3 operating system release, including enhancements to Metrocluster which is fully supported with Oracle Real Application Clusters. Our joint customers can take advantage of these new optimisations and should see broad gains in performance with HP-UX 11i v3.
Oracle will continue to provide product certification across Oracle Database, Oracle Fusion Middleware and Oracle Applications for the HP-UX 11i v3 platform.
