HP-UX 11i v3 Update 3: Performance unleashed

Key workloads optimised, Integrity Virtual Machines accelerated
Content starts here

Run with the latest for optimal application performance, out of the box

At initial release, HP-UX 11i v3 promised 30% faster operating system performance compared to v2.
Did you hear the September '08 news? Running HP-UX 11i v3 Update 2, HP Integrity BL870c Server Blade with HP-UX 11i v3 set the #1 world-record result on the SPECjAppServer2004 benchmark, outperforming the IBM JS22 (POWER6) server by 22%.
We’re back for more: this time, it’s application performance.
Whether you’re running in vPars or Integrity Virtual Machines – and especially if you’re running Oracle, SAP or similar applications – HP-UX 11i v3 Update 3 increases your productivity. Add up the benefits you would accrue by taking advantage of the enhancements below!

Up to 50% faster Oracle – with push-button ease

Tune-N-Tools is an HP-written script that sets 29 tuneable parameters to the values HP used to win industry-standard benchmarks. Run Tune-N-Tools once – anytime – to optimise any size Integrity server for any ERP or transaction processing application.
In HP lab online transaction (OLTP) performance tests with Oracle 11g, HP observed up to 50% faster OLTP performance with Tune-n-Tools tuneables compared to the performance of an untuned system. The tuneable settings also are designed to benefit ERP applications – try Tune-N-Tools for SAP as well, as a first step toward optimised performance!

10–25% faster SAP performance, with continuous latency reduction

Leave it to Locality-Optimised Resource Alignment (LORA) to continually align applications, cores and NUMA memory to minimise latency on cell-based servers
That speed-up pays off highest on the high end – where 25% faster SAP performance can save you 14% of a new Superdome system cost!
Turn it on and let it run for continual alignment as you add to and reconfigure your system.
LORA also benefits any workload running in vPars – up to 10% on average.

Integrity Virtual Machines 4.0 – more capacity, simpler to manage

Larger virtual machines, increased to 8 CPUs, allows you to put more horsepower to work in each VM guest.
Plus, you can now cap CPUs to simplify resource management. HPVM 4.0 also comes with a new performance analysis tool.
Mission-critical virtualisation means integration at HP. HPVM 4.0 integrates with HP-UX 11i v3 features such as multi-pathing, Mass Storage Stack and Dynamic nPartitions to further lower costs and downtime while increasing flexibility.

Up to 6 times greater I/O bandwidth with Integrity Virtual Machines 4.0

HP Integrity Accelerated Virtual I/O (AVIO) eliminates speed bumps between your applications running in Integrity Virtual Machines and the data they access. That means reduced cost, risk and time-to-solution. Compared to the prior release, HP VM 4.0 with AVIO delivers:
  • Increased I/O bandwidth, up to: 6.3X for 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE), 3.7X for 1 GbE and 2X for storage
  • Reduced CPU overheads per I/O, up to: 71% for 1GbE, 89% for 10GbE and 60% for Virtual I/O SCSI storage
  • Near-10 GbE Link rate at larger message sizes
Running Java? Our lab tests show that HP-UX 11i v3 runs SPECjAppServer 3X faster with AVIO than without it.

Next Gen Memory Allocator: Up to 20% faster – and it's free

If you develop software that's multi-threaded or makes small block memory allocations, your software may be in for a boost!
If that’s you – take advantage of up to 20% faster performance for multi-threaded applications and 13% for single threaded applications without third-party software costs, by using our Next Generation Memory Allocator.

When we tested HP-UX 11i v3 on our quality assurance system, we realised performance gains of 26-28 percent. On some of our other systems, we have seen a 30 percent jump in performance by transitioning from version 2 to version 3.

The upgrade to HP Integrity Superdome Servers − with HP-UX 11i v3 and StorageWorks XP Disk Arrays − gives us at least 100 percent improvement in application performance and batch processing.

HP-UX 11i v3 is all about performance and Pervasive DataRush delivers on that promise with virtually linear scalability running benchmarks on HP-UX 11i v3 with Java™ SE 6 on a 32-core HP Integrity server. Together, HP and the Pervasive DataRush dataflow engine and library offer a compelling jumpstart for Java developers who want to rapidly create massively parallel applications lighting up multiple cores to tear though huge data volumes.
