HP-UX 11i v3 power saving features

As part of HP’s Thermal Logic portfolio, HP-UX 11i v3 integrates and expands on HP Integrity’s embedded power saving and manageability features. With HP-UX 11i v3 customers can lower operational costs through operating system level control of processors, I/O cards, and cell boards.

Green Idle
Processors

HP-UX 11i v3 customers can realise a power saving of up to 10% of processor power with this capability. A tunable value can be applied that will determine how aggressive the OS will be in keeping a processor idle once it becomes idle. Some states have been optimised to save power with practically no performance penalty.

pwr_idle_ctl determines how aggressive the OS will be in keeping a processor idle once it has become idle.

Green Active Processors

New with HP-UX 11i v3 Update 4, customers can now save up to 8% of active processor power. Active processors can be set to a dynamic control mode that will change performance states to match processor performance (and power consumption) with utilisation requirements. A static control mode is also available which allows a processor’s performance state to be set and maintained at a tunable value.

pstatectl command enables dynamic or static P-states, provides performance and power consumption information, and sets the static P-state.

Green Idle Cell

Available on cellular platforms, HP-UX 11i v3 allows the ability to power down an unused cell through Dynamic nPartitioning. This provides customers with significant power savings of 700-1000W per cell.

parolrad, frupower commands cycle power on and off a target cell board.

Additional information can be found in the manpages for parolrad(1M) and frupower(1M).

Green Idle I/O

For devices that have extended periods of idle, or for redundant devices when power must be reduced. HP-UX 11i v3 provides the ability to power down PCI cards with savings up to 25W per card.

olrad command allows customers to power down and power up a target OLD-capablePCI device. Additional information can be found in the manpage for olrad(1M).

iLO2 Power
Regulator

iLO2 Power Regulator includes a Power Meter which provides a graphical view to monitor server power usage, temperature, and power regulator settings. Power Regulator provides four modes: Static Low Power Mode, Static High Power Mode, Dynamic Power Savings Mode, and OS Control Mode. Integrity platforms can move from mode to mode without rebooting (unlike x86 platforms).

Insight Power
Manager

IPM enables system managers to graphically monitor and manage power consumption for a single server, or a group of servers and c-Class enclosures using native HP SIM features, including extensive historical data capabilities. As with iLO2 power regulation, IPM power regulation for Integrity servers works in cooperation with HP-UX 11i to make policy-based power and thermal management possible.

Capacity Advisor

Included in the HP-UX 11i v3 Virtual Server and Data Centre OEs, Capacity Advisor can be used to estimate the power that will be used by HP servers under different loading conditions. Combined with IPM, Capacity Advisor will get detailed power readings, and then find the relationship between the use of the system and the power consumed. Capacity Advisor can use that to predict power needs in the future. The prediction takes into account the forecasted growth rate of the workloads, and planned configuration changes such as stacking more workloads or virtual machines on the server.
