Announcing November 2009

Enhanced Online Migration for HP Integrity Virtual Machines v4.1

Three new enhancements are available for Online Migration in Integrity Virtual Machines version 4.1, which is currently planned for release in January 2010:

  • Initiate Online VM Migration using Logical Server Management: This includes the ability to import an Integrity VM guest configuration into a logical server framework for drag-and-drop virtual-to-virtual moves
    • Available via Integrity VM v4.1 Q4 CY2009 patch and HP Insight Dynamics 6.0

  • Initiate Online VM Migration using Integrity Virtual Machine Manager GUI (vmmgr) version 4.1: No license required. Delivered on HP Software Depot—or as part of the HP Insight Dynamics 6.0 DVD. This release also includes: a) removal of I/O devices; b) creation of file-backing storage; and c) support for AVIO attached tape devices with a tool mapping the physical to virtual devices.
    • vmmgr 4.1 is available via Software Depot, or as part of HP Insight Dynamics 6.0

  • Online migration support for VMs with virtual disks mapped to shared LVM (SLVM) logical volumes: Available via Integrity VM v4.1 Q4 CY 2009 patch, and when Serviceguard A.11.19 (with patch PHSS_40152) is installed on the VM Host systems. Virtual machines need not be configured as Serviceguard packages to benefit from the new online migration support for SLVM.

Secure Resource Partitions version 2.1

Secure Resource Partitions version 2.1, also currently planned for January 2010 and available on the HP Software Depot, will include:

  • Cloning and migration: Copy an SRP from one system to another with new export and import functions.

  • Serviceguard integration: Use your existing Serviceguard packages in an SRP environment, or manage the entire SRP as a Serviceguard package. More granular control of storage and network interface management to provide greater choice and flexibility. Use the cloning feature to create and manage your secondary Serviceguard environment..

  • Tomcat/Java application template: Use a pre-configured, tested template for easy setup and provisioning of Tomcat servers.

  • Status reporting: Examine details on SRP resource usage and state.

  • Private filesystem mounting: Control mounting of file systems on a per-SRP basis.

July 2009 enhancements for HP Integrity Virtual Machines (VM) v4.1

Two new capabilities were added with Patch Kit 2 for Integrity VM v4.1 in July 2009:

  • Simultaneous access to tapes, burners, and changers: Integrity VM now provides more efficient sharing of physical hardware connections. Multiple VMs can now share a single device by leveraging attached Accelerated Virtual I/O (AVIO). You can now achieve backup and restore analogous to that of a physical server, and no longer need to do customised scripting. This can reduce or eliminate the need to carefully configure backup policies, making backups faster, less manual, and less error-prone.

  • Microsoft® Windows® Server 2008 guest support for HP Integrity VM: The ability to run multiple operating systems on a single machine enables powerful consolidation. With Patch Kit 2, Integrity Virtual Machines now supports Windows Server 2008 guests. Here’s a complete listing of all the operating systems that can run on Integrity VM today:
    • HP-UX 11i v2 and v3
    • Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Service Pack 2 (SP2); Windows Server 2008 (New in July 2009 with Patch Kit 2 for Integrity VM version 4.1)
    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform 4.4 and 4.5
    • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 10 SP1 and SP2

How to get it

To get the benefits of both new features, you will need the July 15, 2009 Core Integrity VM v4.1 (B.04.10) Patch Kit 2.

April 2009: Announcing Online VM Migration for Integrity Virtual Machines

A separate capability, Online VM Migration, is now available for use with Integrity Virtual Machines v4.1. This enables a running VM, its guest OS and its applications to be moved to a different VM Host without service interruption. Service remains active without an OS reboot or application restart. All I/O connections to storage and networks remain active throughout the migration.HP-UX 11i v2 and v3
