Software virtualisation with OS isolation and dynamic resourcing

Accelerate the performance of your virtual environment HP-UX virtualisation vPars v6 Webinar
HP-UX Virtual Partitions and HP Integrity Virtual Machines:
  • Reduce costs: through consolidation, and greater utilisation of existing resources
  • Increase flexibility: use resources as needed
  • Rapid deployment of new environments

What’s new

With HP-UX vPars v5, instantly adjust Superdome 2 resources:
  • Flex processor cores - dynamically move cores between vPars without downtime.

With HP Integrity Virtual Machines (Integrity VM) v4.3:
  • Double the VM size with: up to 16 cores, 128GB memory and 256 storage LUNs per VM
  • Easier administration:
    • Direct, fast, guest console IP access: virtual iLO Remote Console
    • Low-cost, shared, NFS storage
    • More automated deployment: new tool to dynamically edit virtual firmware

Combine vPar performance with VM management with vPars v6, first improving mission-critical efficiency on Integrity blades:
  • Reduce costs—provide greater virtualisation scalability and more efficient resource utilisation
  • Improve performance—maximise system efficiency with little overhead
  • Increase flexibility—dynamically move cores and shared I/O between vPars, and directly access storage from the VMs with NPIV

Business benefits

  • Reduced cost:
    • Lower: hardware requirements, software licences, management and support costs
    • Maximized server utilisation
    • Consolidation of enterprise server workloads
    • Greater efficiency with faster deployment of new workloads
  • Increased flexibility of resources
  • Increased availability
    • Isolation of operating environments

Technology advantages

HP-UX Virtual Partitions:
  • Soft partitions with high performance
Integrity VM:
  • Suspend/resume functionality—temporarily put workloads 'on the shelf'
  • Traditional high availability (VMs as high availability clustering nodes), and VMs as high availability packages (with application monitoring within the VMs)
  • Direct, fast, guest console IP access: Virtual iLO Remote Console
  • Low-cost, shared NFS storage
  • Flexible vLAN tagging at: guest, vswitch or host level
  • Ease of flexibility and management with: HP Matrix Operating Environment (OE) for HP-UX, HP Instant Capacity, and other HP-UX system management tools

How it works

HP-UX Virtual Partitions (vPars): is a soft partitioning technology, that provides finer, core granularity within a single nPartition. Each virtual partition hosts its own instance of the HP-UX 11i Operating Environment (OE), as well as its own resources, applications and users. The physical resources of the HP Integrity server are parsed among the virtual partitions it hosts.

HP Integrity Virtual Machines (Integrity VM) is a virtualisation technology that provides dynamic, shared resourcing, based on demand and entitlement. Integrity VM enables you to create multiple virtual servers or machines within a single HP Integrity server or nPartition—each with its own 'guest' operating system instance, applications and users.

Online VM Migration enables a running VM, its guest OS, and all of its applications to be moved to a different VM Host without service interruption. Using Online VM Migration allows an administrator to do online maintenance (patch, update, or reconfigure) of VM Hosts, as well as balance server (host) loads, without interruption to the VM Host or virtual machines. Services remain active with no OS reboots or application restarts. All I/O connections to storage and networks remain active during the migration, leaving the change transparent to applications and users.
The functionality can be used in conjunction with other HP tools, such as HP Serviceguard Solutions to provide improved availability and flexibility.

HP-UX Virtual Partitions, Integrity Virtual Machines and Online VM Migration are available as part of the HP-UX 11i v3 Virtual Server Environment Operating Environment (VSE-OE).
