Webcast description

This Webcast describes the kernel tracing facility – ktracer – that runs on HP-UX 11i.

It starts with an overview of ktracer features, audience and purpose, then explains the interface and sample output, then delves into how it works, and covers a real-life example of using ktracer to troubleshoot a performance slowdown.

We welcome your feedback!

Agenda

  • Overview: features, audience, purpose
  • User interface: ktracer, ktracedump, Caliper
  • Sample output
  • How does kernel tracing work?
  • Case study: Troubleshoot a performance slowdown
  • Additional features
  • Conclusion, availability and support

Audience

This Webcast is intended for software developers working with the HP-UX 11i operating system – in both independent software vendor and end user companies – and the channel partner and HP technical representatives who support them. In particular, this course is for developers who want to trace kernel procedure calls, parameters and path flow in order to learn, analyse or troubleshoot HP-UX 11i OS behaviour.

Objectives

The audience should gain an understanding of the usefulness of kernel tracing, how to invoke it, what information it provides, and how it works.

Speaker biography

Carol Petersen Muser is a Senior Software Design Engineer on the HP-UX Kernel Performance Team. Her area of expertise includes kernel tracing, profiling and instrumentation, benchmark tracking, and trouble-shooting. Her experience in this role spans a decade.

Through Carol's dedication to exceptional performance, ktracer is faster by an order of magnitude. Thanks to her attention to a richer total customer experience, ktracer is easier to invoke and understand, and more broadly available.

Because of her innovativeness and technical ability, ktracer is capable of creating thousands more trace points, dynamically programmable action at each trace point, and playing well with Itanium and PA/RISC processors, Cell OL*, cell local memory (CLM) and soon, dynamic loadable kernel modules and HP Virtual Machines.
