September 2008 – Recently released updates to worldwide market share figures from IDC make a very compelling case for Hewlett-Packard’s leadership in storage. The latest IDC results are a strong indicator of how much customers value HP storage offerings, since market share leadership demonstrates customers’ confidence in investing their valued money in HP storage based on the return on investment they will receive.
Consider these facts:
According to IDC, HP shipped more disk storage systems than the next 7 competitors combined in Q208 with 43.2% market share and over 10 consecutive quarters of leadership.
HP shipped more terabytes of disk storage systems than any other vendor – shipping over 389,000 TB of storage. In fact, more than one out of every 5 TB of storage worldwide is shipped from HP.
One out of every five external storage systems was shipped from HP, over 8 market share points higher than the nearest competitor; with over 10 consecutive quarters of leadership.
Growing nearly 4x greater than the overall market Q/Q, HP grabbed over 3% points of market share; accelerating into a 2% market share point lead over the nearest competitor.
Also this is the fifth consecutive quarter during which HP has shipped more networked storage systems (NAS and SAN systems) than any other vendor. Growing 2.8x greater than the market Q/Q, HP increased its market share by 1.8% to 16.4% of the total market.
In fact one out of every three branded tape drives and nearly one out of every three branded tape automation units was shipped from HP! HP dominated the branded tape drive market, accounting for 36.5% of the total branded tape drive shipments; 12 market share points higher than the nearest competitor.3
HP also shipped the most tape automation systems during the period, shipping almost 1 out of every 3 systems with a market share point lead of 11 points over then nearest competitor! 4
During Q208, HP storage software showed the strongest growth than any other vendor, growing 2.5x the market, Q/Q. Contributing to this growth was HP storage management software that grew 118% Q/Q, more than 10 times greater than the market grew, and 87% Y/Y growth, moving HP into 4th largest vendor for storage management software.
HP also strengthened its position as the 2nd largest storage device management software vendor by growing 2x greater than the market did Q/Q. Plus HP solidified its position as 5th largest data protection and recovery software vendor, growing 1.4x greater than the market Q/Q.
