Warning: Possible data loss during large data recovery on tapes using Ignite-UX versions C.7.11.439 and C.7.11.444 on HP Integrity systems
A potential data loss problem has been discovered in Ignite-UX versions C.7.11.439 and C.7.11.444 affecting the creation of recovery tapes on HP Integrity systems running HP-UX 11i v2 or 11i v3. When writing an archive to tape, if the end of the tape is encountered, a new tape will not be prompted for and any subsequent data will be discarded without any notification to the user. This may lead to creation of an incomplete and unusable recovery tape.
Note: Following usage scenarios are still valid and are a non-issue:
Steps to determine if the data archived fits into a single tape:
To determine if a tape created by Ignite-UX versions C.7.11.439 or C.7.11.444 on an HP Integrity system is not valid, run the following commands:
# mt -f /dev/rmt/#mn rew
# mt -f /dev/rmt/#mn fsf 22
# pax -v -f /dev/rmt/#m
where # must be replaced by the number associated with the device that the tape has been loaded into. If the archive listing by pax completes without prompting for a new tape, the recovery tape has been created successfully. If you are prompted for a second tape, the recovery tape is not valid and should not be relied upon for recovery.
Workaround and compatibility considerations:
To help you mitigate the impact of this issue, HP has made available the web release of Ignite-UX version C.7.12.519.
If you have systems that require two or more tapes to create a recovery archive, you must remove Ignite-UX versions C.7.11.439 or C.7.11.444 from those systems and install C.7.12.519 or later versions.
If you continue to use Ignite-UX versions C.7.11.439 or C.7.11.444 you must verify any recovery tape created using the above instructions.
This issue has been fixed in the version of Ignite-UX that has been released in the version C.7.13.240 and later.
