The Real Story about HP 9000 evolution to Integrity

Content starts here
HP delivers a solid bridge to the future of enterprise computing August 2008 — The natural path for HP 9000 customers is an evolution to HP Integrity servers. However, IBM is promoting a Power Rewards “points” program that does not tell the Real Story. An “apples-to-apples” comparison shows why a transition to HP Integrity has many advantages, including a smooth, easy path; a proven platform; and less disruption to your environment.

Please consider the following facts:

Fact 1: Moving to HP Integrity servers is a transition, but moving to IBM is a full-blown migration.

  • Data is compatible across HP 9000 and HP Integrity servers, as are database versions. Simply reconnect storage and you are back to work. Migrating to IBM requires a complete data migration.
  • HP’s investments in virtualization mean you can easily move workloads from standalone HP 9000 servers to Integrity servers using pooled resources.
  • Systems management and administration represent years of your time and investments in scripts and best practices for HP-UX and related tools.

Fact 2: The HP 9000 Evolution Program offers a great deal that IBM simply can’t match.

  • IBM offers you various trade-ins, free assessments, software license exchanges, etc.— all designed to encourage HP 9000 users to switch to their POWER6 servers.
  • HP offers many resources—at no charge—including no-strings special offers on trade-ins, software credits, free transition consulting workshops, and refurbished equipment; parallel support of applications on HP 9000 and Integrity servers; as well as HP Financial Services.
  • HP transition practices and tools automate processes using a proven five-phase framework: awareness, plan, design, implement, manage. This framework integrates all the elements of an IT environment, including the platform infrastructure, internally developed software, ISV applications and databases.
  • Most of the tools and methodologies are available free of charge for customers seeking a do-it-yourself approach. Or, customers can request an HP Services implementation.
  • HP offers on-site engagements with HP transition experts to assist customers with their future projects or transition plans. These engagements, known as Account Consulting Sessions and Transition Consulting Workshops are offered free of charge to qualifying customers.
  • As an example of maximizing ROI, an HP-sponsored study shows that the total cost to upgrade from HP 9000 to HP Integrity servers nearly always pays for itself in less than three years—and usually in less than two.1

Fact 3: IBM offers migration services, but only if you accumulate IBM Power Rewards “points.” HP includes most of same services—for free.

  • IBM says its Power Rewards is like a “frequent flyer” program to trade-in or retire your HP 9000 system. IBM claims you can spend your “points” for discounts on hardware, software, or services—the high-margin, very profitable solutions that IBM would like to get you hooked on.
  • You do not need “points” to transition from HP 9000 to HP Integrity servers. The HP 9000 Evolution Program already includes a vast array of very attractive promotions and support programs. For example:
    • Free planning tools and services
    • Free transition services
    • In-The-Box Upgrades to minimize risk and reduce cost and effort
    • Trade-in/Trade-up programs covering hardware, software, and operating system with credits ranging up to 20%—with competitive pricing and licensing strategies

Fact 4: To help you quickly achieve better business results, HP offers a wide array of transition and complementary tools to simplify the transition to Integrity servers.

  • HP transition modules provide planning tools for upgrading from HP 9000 to HP Intregrity servers. They address key transition topics, including:
    • Method and framework for design, implementation, and management phases based on your specific needs and goals
    • Platform infrastructure (servers, operating systems, storage, tape devices)
    • Packaged applications from independent software vendors
    • Oracle® databases
  • The HP Software Transition Kit contains tools and documentation to help transition source code from HP-UX, Linux, Tru64 UNIX®, or Solaris to HP-UX 11i on Integrity servers.
  • If a you do not have source code—or do not want to port it—the ARIES binary translator is embedded in the HP-UX 11i operating system. The ARIES technology does not require recompilation of the code.
