HP Integrity NonStop open source software frequently asked questions

Q. Why is HP providing ports of open source packages for NonStop?

The basic idea behind the open source community is very simple - when software developers can read, redistribute and modify the source code for a piece of software, the software evolves. We believe that our NonStop customers should be able to leverage the open source packages that are available on other platforms to improve productivity, lower the TCO and be at par with the rest of the industry.

Q. What is the cost of downloading and using these packages?

The open source packages ported by the HP NonStop organization are available as a free download. The use of these packages is governed by the specific license file(s) which are packaged in the download.

Q. Are there any open source packages that are supported by HP NonStop?

By listening to you, the customer, HP NonStop has identified key open source packages that are essential in providing successful web solutions. As of early 2007, the following products have been configured, tested, documented and fully supported for HP NonStop customers:

Open Source Project NonStop Product Name Product ID (S-Series/Integrity)
Apache Xerces C++ NonStop XML Parser SX20 / Part of the OS
eXpat NonStop Fast XML Parser SX25 / Part of the OS
gSoap NonStop Soap Client SX24v1 / Part of the OS
Apache Tomcat NonStop Servlets for Java Server Pages SJ88, SJ89 / HSJ88
Apache Xalan NonStop XSLT SX22 / Part of the OS

Q. What kind of support is provided for these open source packages?

HP does not provide support for the open source packages that have been ported to the NonStop platform (except for the ones listed in the previous question) and are available as a web download. However, you can notify the HP NonStop Open Source Software team if you find defects. HP will report defects to the related open source communities and incorporate the appropriate fixes in each new release. To provide feedback or report a defect, contact the HP NonStop Open Source Software team.

Q. What can I do to support the open source initiative that HP NonStop has started?

The basic idea behind open source is very simple: When programmers can read, redistribute, and modify the source code for a piece of software, the software evolves. People improve it, people adapt it, people fix bugs.

HP NonStop has kick-started this process by making available around 200 open source applications on ITUG's ITUGLIB website. We encourage the community to continue this process by updating these packages, uploading new packages or simply porting the latest versions of existing packages as governed by the appropriate open source license. For more information on how to contribute, please visit the ITUGLIB Web site.

Q. What should I do if I do not find an open source package available on HP NonStop?

There are a few things that you can do if you do not find an open source package currently ported onto HP NonStop.

  1. You can check if the package has been ported by some other NonStop open source enthusiast at ITUGLIB (part of the ITUG Web site).
  2. If you do not find your package on ITUGLIB, you can send in a request to the HP NonStop Open Source Software team.
  3. However, if you want to go ahead and port this application yourself, you can follow the guidelines provided in this white paper.
