By implementing the Best Practices provided in this white paper, HP was able to deliver a 22% increase in application performance, a 70% reduction in array I/O and an associated 28% reduction in CPU utilization during replication.  By tuning the XP cache sidefile usage during asynchronous replication, potential data loss was reduced by ~40% without impacting overall database performance, providing a significant increase in RPO.

Although disk-array-based remote copy infrastructures have been in use for over a decade, most users lack the information required to properly configure the database, storage system, and software for remote replication. When properly configured and deployed, these infrastructures are capable of providing timely recovery from a variety of failures, up to and including the loss of an entire datacenter site.  The key requirement for effective deployment is that remote copying of databases must be done in concert with the native relational database management system (RDBMS) technology in order for the solution to be practical.

This solution provides a comprehensive set of test-proven best practices for properly configuring, deploying, and operating an Oracle 10g database with Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM) on an HP StorageWorks XP12000 Disk Array (XP12000) in an HP-UX environment using HP StorageWorks XP Continuous Access Software as the remote copy infrastructure.

Specifically, the fundamental deployment issues this solution addresses are as follows:

  • The best way to configure an Oracle 10g database and the XP12000 for replication.
  • The impact on database performance and throughput for each method of replication (synchronous, asynchronous, and asynchronous journal).
  • The impact of the latency in the remote link on replication behavior, and how it influences the choice of replication method.
  • General considerations for choosing which replication method to use
  • Recommended best practices for the major elements of the deployment (servers, storage device, and database)

The methods and best practices described in this paper are designed to facilitate both the productive planning and timely deployment of a fully operational remote copy infrastructure to ensure:

  • Predictable performance characteristics
  • Ease of operation
  • Satisfactory recoverability capabilities
