The investment in a backup and recovery infrastructure is significant, and the deployment and management is the largest component of this investment.  There are many hardware, software and procedures available to backup a database environment as well as plan for recovery.  Hardware options include disk, tape and other new hybrid technologies such as virtual tape systems.  There are also many software options for managing the process of backing up and recovering the data.  Determining which combination of hardware, software and procedures to use can be challenging; the actual implementation and integration can prove to be difficult; and the overall results may be unpredictable.

This white paper describes test results that used a combination of three Linux-based Oracle 10g environments, and three backup infrastructures – an HP Enterprise Modular Tape Library, an HP Virtual Tape Library System and HP Enterprise Virtual Disk Array.  The purpose of the testing was to develop best practices for the backup and restore of an Oracle 10g environment using HP Data Protector backup software across all combinations of the three backup infrastructures and the three Oracle 10g environments.

The white paper focuses on the following deployment and operational issues:

  • A set of test-proven best practices for the backup/recovery of Oracle10g databases, including methodologies describing how to deploy disk, tape, virtual tape, setting backup/recovery software options, and optimum configurations.
  • The comparative impact of performance on the Oracle application while a backup is taking place.
  • The comparative impact of performance on the backup while the Oracle application is running.
  • Detailed comparisons of Disk-to-Disk, Disk-to-Tape, and Disk Staging (Combination of Disk-to-Disk and Disk-to-Tape) backup and restore methodologies.
  • The key planning and deployment considerations for DataProtector, Oracle 10g, and the server and SAN infrastructure.
