» Global citizenship: energy goals

So, what exactly is a carbon footprint? In short, it’s the total amount of CO2 and other greenhouse gases emitted over the full life cycle of a product or service. Think of it as a gauge for the overall environmental impact a person or organization has on the planet.

Let revolutionary new HP technologies play a key role in reducing the carbon footprint of your data center

Cut data center carbon footprint up to 40%

Dynamic Smart Cooling adds intelligence to your existing air conditioning system to optimize the flow of cold air to where it’s needed most. You achieve a new level of energy-efficient cooling, decrease power consumption, and take great strides in reducing your carbon footprint.

Consolidate to reduce your server footprint up to 70%

Server consolidation is a great way to reduce greenhouse gas emission, and at the same time reduce materials use, cost, and energy consumption.  We're our own best test case. In one application alone, virtualization and consolidation reduced our server power consumption from 5 million kWh to 1.8 million kWh.

Take consolidation all the way

Server consolidation is a great place to start. When you consolidate storage, networking, applications, data, and even your data centers, you can reduce your carbon footprint to a greater degree; pool and share data stores across your enterprise; devote more of your human and financial resources to driving innovation, and take control of your carbon footprint.

Purchase clean, renewable energy

At HP, we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint through the purchase of clean, or renewable energy, energy generated from 100% clean wind and solar power resources.

For example, in 2006, HP purchased 11 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable energy for use in its operations. HP also joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power Purchase program – a challenge to Fortune 500 companies to double their renewable energy purchases by the end of 2007. HP plans to increase renewable energy purchases by more than 350 percent by procuring 50 million kWh of renewable electricity during 2007.

HP’s clean energy purchases in 2007 are estimated to prevent the emissions of more than 25 million kilograms of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

We encourage you to seek out renewable energy options for your data center. Where possible, always choose utility providers who supply clean energy solutions. In some areas, utility providers offer discounts to businesses employing clean energy technology.

Environmental leadership through scientific advancement

HP launched the company wide “Design for the Environment” program back in 1992. As a result, HP labs and engineering have received over 1,000 patents for power and cooling innovations.
