Bringing Clinical Research into the Personalized Medicine Era - The Role of Information Technology
John Speakman - NCI, Center for Bioinformatics

This presentation will discuss the current direction and pace of drug discovery, and especially the broadening gap between this and the state of the art in clinical development. The National Cancer Institute's Cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIGTM) Program is addressing this issue using a modular paradigm—in effect a services-oriented architecture for the Life Sciences—as opposed to the monolithic systems currently found in clinical research. An interoperable series of software modules is being developed; these modules can exchange information and functionality not just with each other, but also with modules in the basic science domain, either existing or yet to be envisaged.
