Professor Desmond Fitzgerald, MB BCh BAO MD FRCPI FESC Vice President for Research, University College Dublin Professor of Molecular Medicine, Conway Institute of Biomolecular and Biomedical Research, University College Dublin
Professor Desmond Fitzgerald is a UCD medical graduate who trained in Cardiology and Clinical Pharmacology at Vanderbilt University. Prior to his current appointment as Vice President for Research in University College Dublin, he was Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at The Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (RCSI), where over 10 years he built a department of 120 teaching and research staff with divisions that included cardiovascular pharmacology, mass spectrometry, proteomics, bioinformatics and neuroscience. In his previous appointment, Professor Fitzgerald was also Director of the Institute of Biopharmaceutical Sciences at RCSI and led their Higher Education Authority, Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions, which was awarded €65 million over three successive cycles. The team also attracted more than €17 million in funding from Science Foundation Ireland. Professor Fitzgerald has published more than 140 papers on cardiovascular pharmacology and inflammation and currently leads a molecular medicine group in the Conway Institute.
Donald L. Holmquest, MD, Ph.D., J.D. CEO, California Regional Health Organization
Donald L. Holmquest, M.D., Ph.D., J.D., began his tenure in August 2006 as President and CEO of CalRHIO, a statewide initiative to securely electronically access patient medical information where and when it is needed. He is responsible for carrying out the organization’s mission, developing and leading its strategy, and fund raising.
Dr. Holmquest spent much of his career practicing medicine and law in Houston. At Baylor College of Medicine, his work included creating an information technology platform to support disease management. His law practice focused on assisting hospitals and physician groups with strategic planning and growth. Most recently, Dr. Holmquest was director of physician adoption for computerized physician order entry (CPOE) at McKesson’s information technology division, San Francisco, the world’s largest vendor of healthcare industry information systems.
He earned an M.D., as well as a Ph.D. in physiology and endocrinology, from Baylor College of Medicine and a J.D. from the University of Houston, Bates College of Law. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Southern Methodist University.
Dr. Holmquest is a fellow of the American College of Nuclear Physicians, and is also an honorary lifetime member of the American Fighter Pilots Association. He is a member of the board of the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange (WEDI).
David K. Rosen, D.V.M. Head, Development and Commercial Alliances, Pfizer

Dr. David K. Rosen is currently Head of Development and Commercial Strategic Alliances for Pfizer Global Research and Development. In his role, Dr. Rosen is responsible for leading a team of business development professionals focused on the licensing and acquisition of biomarkers, diagnostics and delivery systems that will enable or complement the Pfizer pharmaceutical portfolio across 11 therapeutic areas in both pharmaceutical development and commercial sales. Dr. Rosen is a 1980 graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Madison (Bacteriology) and a 1984 graduate of Iowa State University, College of Veterinary Medicine. He obtained his board certification in Feline Practice in 1995. After 10 years as an owner of a private feline practice, Dr. Rosen joined the pharmaceutical industry, first with SmithKline Beecham and Pfizer Animal Health followed by three years in the biotechnology industry with Heska Corporation in business development. In 1999, Dr. Rosen joined Pharmacia and Upjohn Company as Head of Business Development for their Animal Health Division. After the acquisition of Pharmacia Corporation by Pfizer in 2003, he joined the Strategic Alliances organization of Pfizer Global Research and Development as Site Head for Strategic Alliances at Pfizer's St. Louis, Missouri research laboratories. During his career in the biotechnology and the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Rosen has worked in Licensing and Acquisition and also directed project teams responsible for the development of diagnostics, pharmaceuticals and vaccines.

Jillian started her career as a journalist working for the Victorian publication, the Melbourne Herald. She worked in print and electronic media for four years in Hong Kong during the Vietnam War period. Besides working with some well known and inspiring media people, highlights of her South East Asian sojourn included being in Indonesia for President Sukarno’s last Presidential speech and a visit to the Australian troops in Vietnam.
On her return to Australia she continued working as a journalist in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide (including a stint on the Parliamentary Press Gallery during the last days of the Premiership of Sir Henry Bolte). Jillian married into the navy which led to a relatively nomadic life, with many years living in different parts of the United States.
On her permanent return to Sydney Jillian started her own editorial consultancy which mostly involved corporate writing and strategic planning. She worked for companies ranging from ‘the big Australian’ to small but innovative ‘go getters’.
Jillian has also been very involved in the local community; at the schools her children attended, helping to establish childcare facilities, and working with service clubs and business organizations.
Immediately before being elected as the Member for North Shore in 1994, Jillian was the Director of the NSW Office of Youth Affairs. She worked with a dedicated team of people to develop policy, design and implement programs particularly aimed at helping disadvantaged young people improve their education and employment skills.
She’s been on numerous boards and committees including the NSW Youth Advisory Council and the NSW Women’s Advisory Committee. Jillian has twice since been re-elected to represent the people of North Shore.
She was Shadow Minister for Health and Shadow Minister for Youth Affairs from 1995 until 2003 (with a break in Youth Affairs from 1999 until 2002), Shadow Minister for Education & Training and Shadow Minister for The Arts following the 2003 election until September 2004 when she was reappointed Shadow Minister for Health and retained the Arts portfolio.

Gail K. Naughton, Ph.D. Dean of College of Business Administration, San Diego State University
Gail K. Naughton, Ph.D., has been the Dean of the College of Business Administration at San Diego State University since August 2002. Prior to that, she spent more than 15 years at Advanced Tissue Sciences, where she was the company’s co-founder and co-inventor of its core technology. During her tenure there, Dr. Naughton held a variety of key management positions, including president, chief operating officer, chief scientific officer and principal scientist. While serving as an officer and director of the Company, Dr. Naughton oversaw the design and development of the world’s first up-scaled manufacturing facility for tissue engineered products, established corporate development and marketing partnerships with companies including Smith & Nephew, Ltd., Medtronic and Inamed Corporation, was pivotal in raising over $350M from the public market and corporate partnerships, and brought four products from concept through FDA approval and market launch. Dr. Naughton holds over 90 U.S. and foreign patents and has been extensively published in the field of tissue engineering. In 2000, Dr. Naughton received the 27th Annual National Inventor of the Year award by the Intellectual Property Owners Association in honor of her pioneering work in the field of tissue engineering.
In addition to her duties at San Diego State University, Dr. Naughton serves as a director for several not-for-profit foundations. She also sits on the scientific and industry advisory boards of leading universities including the Georgia Institute of Technology, and is a member of the Board of Directors of the California Health Institute, the San Diego World Trade Center, the San Diego State University Corporate Governance Institute, City of Hope as well as being a member of the Mayor’s Science & Technology Council, and Rotary International. She is currently on the board of one private biotechnology company: DermTech International and two public companies, C.R. Bard, Inc. and SYS Technologies Inc.
Dr. Naughton earned her Ph.D. in Basic Medical Sciences and her M.S. in histology from the New York University Medical Center. She earned an executive MBA in 2001 from the Anderson School at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Michael L. Cowen, M.D. Chief Medical Officer for Health Services, BearingPoint
Dr. Michael Cowen joined BearingPoint, Inc. in October 2005, as its Chief Medical Officer. In this capacity he leads the development of new service offerings and advises on strategic recruitment and development of key practitioners. Based in Tysons Corner, Virginia, he is responsible for heading BearingPoint’s thought leadership in healthcare and social services.
Dr. Cowan was the Senior Vice President for Healthcare Solutions at Oracle Corporation prior to joining BearingPoint, and before that had an illustrious 33 year career in the U.S. Navy, culminating in 2001 with his selection as the 34th Naval Surgeon General. As such, he led over 40,000 personnel working in 120 medical, dental, research and teaching facilities worldwide, and provided medical forces deployed with the Navy and Marine Corps around the world
He earned his medical degree from Washington University, St. Louis, and completed postgraduate training in Internal Medicine, hematology and oncology at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda.
Dennis Goikas Chief Technology Officer, Canada Health Infoway
Dennis Goikas is responsible for the overall electronic health record solution architecture, standards, security, privacy and toolkits. With over 20 years of experience in the information technology (IT) consulting field, he has previously held executive positions at Sapient Corporation, most recently as Vice President and Managing Director of its Canadian subsidiary. He has also consulted on IT strategy with a wide array of clients with Symmetrix, and has held several senior positions with Digital Equipment Corporation, including those of Consulting Engineer, Engineering Manager, and Group Technical Director. Mr. Goikas holds a masters degree in Computer Science from Boston University, a Masters of Music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music, and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. Mr. Goikas has written numerous articles on his software solutions. He also holds two patents for software innovations and has one industrial design patent.

Alan Louie, Ph.D. Research Director, Health Industry Insights
Dr. Alan Louie is Research Director at Health Industry Insights (HII), An IDC Company. In this role, he is spearheading HII research in two areas: 1) the emerging opportunity for personalized health and 2) technology and IT innovation in drug discovery. Dr. Louie brings more than 23 years of technical, product development, and business consulting experience from the diagnostics and biotechnology industries. Previously, Dr. Louie led applied biotechnology programs as Senior Manager at Arthur D. Little, Inc. At Arthur D. Little, he led and managed numerous strategic and laboratory-based technology development programs, as well as provided content expertise to healthcare management consulting projects. Prior to joining Arthur D. Little, he was responsible for the development and commercialization of more than 30 products for a variety of industries, including many first-in-class product offerings. Antoine Geissbuhler Professor of Medical Informatics, Chairman of the Department of Radiology and Medical Informatics at Geneva University, Director of the Division of Medical Informatics at Geneva University Hospitals, and President of the Health-On-the-Net Foundation Council
A Philips European Young Scientist first award laureate, he graduated from Geneva University School of Medicine in 1991 and received his doctorate for work on tridimensional reconstruction of positron emission tomography images. He then trained in internal medicine under the direction of Prof. Francis Waldvogel. After a post-doctoral fellowship in medical informatics at the University of Pittsburgh and Vanderbilt University, he became associate professor of biomedical informatics and vice chairman of the Division of Biomedical Informatics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, under the mentorship of Prof. Randolph Miller and Prof. William Stead, working primarily on the development of clinical information systems and knowledge-management tools. In 1999, he returned to Geneva to head the Division of Medical Informatics in Geneva University Hospitals and School of Medicine, following in the steps of Prof. Jean-Raoul Scherrer who founded this world-renowned group. In 2005, his efforts in developing telemedicine and tele-education are recognized by the creation of the UNESCO chair for telemedicine and multidisciplinary teaching.
Author of more than 80 original scientific publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, his current research focuses on the development of innovative, knowledge-enabled information systems and computer-based tools for improving the quality and efficiency of care processes, at the local level of the hospital, the regional level of a community healthcare informatics network, and at the global level with the Health-On-the-Net Foundation (http://www.hon.ch) and with the development of a south-south telemedicine network in Africa (http://raft.hcuge.ch).
Tina Brown-Stevenson President, Aetna Integrated Informatics
Tina Brown-Stevenson is President of Aetna Integrated Informatics, where she leads a unit of more than 160 employees nationwide devoted to researching and developing sophisticated clinical and financial information products and services. Ms. Brown-Stevenson has a strong background in managed care, including medical and quality management, information management and product development. Prior to joining Aetna, she worked at CIGNA Healthcare, where she was Vice President of HealthCare Economics. In that position, she led a staff of more than 200 professionals, who were responsible for utilizing data to drive business results in the areas of medical cost management, medical forecasting and customer reporting.
Ms. Brown-Stevenson is a certified managed care executive who holds an M.A. in healthcare administration from Framingham State College and a B.S. in nursing from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She is a co-author of a study published in the Journal of Rheumatology, and a frequent guest lecturer on managed care topics.

Donna Strating holds the position of Vice President, Information Systems and Equipment, and Chief Information Officer for Capital Health—one of Canada's largest integrated academic institutions—located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Donna has been in the role of CIO since 2001 and led the organization through key system initiatives such as four Canada Health Infoway projects (EMPI, PACS, iEHR, and Innovation – CDM); development of netCARE Canada’s first regional electronic health record; expansion of netCARE to provincial solution; development of regional diabetes EMR; and launching of public/private shared services ambulatory scheduling and EMR solution. Donna took on responsibility for Equipment Planning in the fall of 2005.

Michael P. Birt, Ph.D. Director, Center for Health and Aging, The National Bureau of Asian Research, Seattle
Michael P. Birt is Director of the Center for Health and Aging at The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) and Executive Director of the Pacific Health Summit. He also currently holds the position of Affiliate Investigator at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
Prior to opening the Center for Health and Aging at NBR, Dr. Birt co-founded a leading U.S.-Asia biomedical business development company and has consulted for many of the world’s leading healthcare, medical technology, and consumer product companies. In his academic career, Michael Birt was an assistant professor at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington from 1983-1986 and an assistant professor at Wellesley College from 1986-1987. He has served as a visiting professor at Keio University and Hitotsubashi University in Japan.
Dr. Birt is the author of numerous publications and consulting studies. Michael Birt received his Ph.D. in East Asian Studies from Princeton University and has also completed the Certificate Program in Gerontology at the University of Washington. He is fluent in spoken and written Japanese.

William Mohlenbrock, M.D. Founder and Chairman, Crossflo Systems Inc.
Dr. Mohlenbrock has combined entrepreneurialism with a successful orthopedic surgery practice for more than 25 years at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, California. He has also served as assistant clinical professor at the University of California, San Diego since 1973. In 1983, Dr. Mohlenbrock founded Iameter Medical and developed the Acuity Index Method, a clinical information system for monitoring and improving quality and cost-efficient inpatient care. Virtually all aspects of clinical practice, including transportable electronic health records and emergency preparedness software depend on secure information sharing among many disparate systems. Dr. Mohlenbrock therefore founded Crossflo Systems in 2002 to develop a technology that could overcome the complexities, expense and disruption of traditional systems integration technologies. Data sharing challenges are not unique to medicine and other industries have benefited from Crossflo’s technology, which it now markets to a wide range of healthcare and government organizations.
Dr. Mohlenbrock received his BS degree from the University of Illinois and his MD from the St. Louis University School of Medicine. He is a member of the American Medical Association and holds fellowships in the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons and the American College of Physician Executives. He is also a noted international lecturer and has published numerous articles on measuring and improving the quality and cost efficiency of medical care.
John Speakman NCI, Center for Bioinformatics
John Speakman serves as Associate Director of Clinical Trials Products and Programs of the Center for Bioinformatics at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). He leads NCI’s informatics initiatives in support of clinical trials. John joined NCI in 2006 from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City and, prior to that, St. Thomas’s Hospital in London, UK. He is especially interested in the contribution of information technology to the reengineering of the clinical trials process. A key component of this contribution will be the reuse of data captured at or near the point of care in clinical trials.
Erik Johnson Managing Director, True North Program, The Advisory Board
Erik Johnson is the Managing Director for the True North Program, the Advisory Board Company’s service for Chief Information Officers. True North seeks to facilitate effective decision making and accelerate the implementation and efficacy of new information technologies across hospitals and health systems. As Managing Director, Mr. Johnson oversaw the initial launch of the program and is responsible for the design, Perspectivesservices that prove most useful to health system executive teams.
Prior to his current position, Mr. Johnson was Vice President, Global Technical Account Management Services, at MicroStrategy, a business intelligence software company in McLean, Virginia, where he directed a complete redesign of the way MicroStrategy delivered consulting and implementation services to clients around the world. He began his career as a budget analyst in the Executive Office of the President, with responsibility for the Medicare Part A program and providing analytical support for the Healthcare Reform Task Force in 1993-1994.
Mr. Johnson holds an MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business and a BA with honors and distinction from Stanford University.

Alex Go Director, Clinical Client Product Management, Digital Health Group Healthcare IT, Intel Corporation
Alex Go is the Director of Product Management for Intel’s Digital Health Group, Clinical Client organization. His team is responsible for the planning, definition, and marketing of the newly announced Mobile Clinical Assistant platform, designed specifically to address the unmet needs of nurses and physicians.
Previously, Alex led Digital Health Group’s Strategic Planning organization, responsible for setting the long-term strategic direction for Digital Health Group. He also led Intel’s Desktop Product Group’s Strategic Planning organization for 4 years and helped drive Intel’s efforts in transforming the company’s planning processes from solely component-based to platform-level. As a result of his efforts, Alex was the recipient of Intel’s Value Advocates Award in 2004, as well as several Divisional Recognition Awards.
Prior to joining Intel, Alex also held a variety of positions over a span of 10 years as a World Wide Product Manager, regional sales manager, and applications engineering manager. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from California Polytechnic, San Luis Obispo.
Rod Coombs Vice President Solutions Technology, Cerner Corporation
Mr. Coombs career, spanning more than 30 years of change in technology, has been largely devoted to successful technology innovation. In various positions with EDS, Cincom Systems and DSI, he has been responsible for the development, architecture and advancement of database technologies (Total, TIS, Ultra, Supra), 4GL (Mantis), system generation toolsets (ApGen) and 2 and 3-D CAD systems (XCAD). His embedded database engines were used by virtually all hardware vendors in the 70s and early 80s including CDC, Honeywell, NCR , Harris, Prime, Varian, Data Genera, ICL and Wang to name a few.
With Distributed Solutions international in the early 90s, his systems generation tools were used to create templates for technology infrastructure for emerging third-world nations on behalf of the United Nations (UNWRA), specifically Palestine.
In 1994, he was attracted to Penn State University, Hershey Medical Center to provide technology direction for Clinical information Systems planning. While at PSU he served as Technology Adviser to the 19 early adopters of Cerner’s Millenium Architecture, a role which afforded a unique opportunity to participate in planning from both sides of the problem.
In early 1998, Rod assumed the role of VP Product Engineering for ADAC Laboratories. This led to the introduction of the industries first RIS Centric PACS solution. With the acquisition of portions of ADAC in 2000, Rod joined Cerner, focusing upon technology architecture for distributed enterprisewide healthcare solutions in global settings.
Eric Toburen Director of Life Sciences, Genilogix
Eric Toburen is the Director of Life Sciences for Genilogix responsible for developing strategies to provide products and services that enable life sciences companies to address FDA regulations throughout their quality assurance process. Throughout his 12 years in the life sciences industry, Eric has focused applying technology to deliver solutions that break the traditional modes of thinking while providing opportunities to derive real value from the computer validation life cycle. Bruce Greenstein Senior Director of Worldwide Health, Microsoft Corporation
Bruce Greenstein leads the development and execution of Microsoft’s industry strategy focusing on worldwide health and social services segments of healthcare. Prior to Microsoft, Bruce served as Associate Regional Administrator at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and as the Director for the Division of Waivers and Demonstrations in CMS’ Center for Medicaid and State Operations. Michelle Robertson is one of several business development managers that support Cisco's Healthcare Practice for North America. In this role, Michelle's primary focus is the US West Region. Prior to joining Cisco, Michelle's background covers 24 years of sales experience in business development, sales management and product sales support in various roles at Xerox, D&B and Gartner. Mr. Taylor is Accelrys' vice president of marketing. He brings more than 20 years of experience in the high-technology field, including over 8 years of marketing and sales experience in the software tools sector. Mohan Uttarwar is president and CEO of BioImagene Inc, a company specializing in Image Informatics solutions for Digital Pathology. Mohan co-founded BioImagene as he believes that digital pathology will improve pathology practices.
Mohan is a true Silicon Valley entrepreneur, with more than 20 years of experience in setting up high technology start-ups. He started his career in software development. Being an entrepreneur at heart, he left his job to co-found a company called DigiTools that became a success in the enterprise project and resource management software. He co-founded and was the CEO of Softplus Inc – a leading provider of e-crm software. He was the co-founder and CEO of Roamware Inc – a global leader in roaming services.
Mohan holds a masters degree in computer science from the Florida Institute of Technology as well as a Masters of Electrical Engineering from Bombay University.
He actively participates and is a charter member of TIE – a Silicon Valley-based forum for entrepreneurs. He is on the board of IDE – a leading non-profit devoted to the eradication of rural poverty worldwide. In addition to his passion for innovative start-ups, Mohan likes to climb mountains like Mount Kailash in India, Mount Whitney and most recently Mount Kilimanjaro.
Dr. Peter Hamilton Managing Director, i-Path Diagnostics Ltd
Professor Hamilton is Managing Director of i-Path Diagnostics Ltd, a company specializing in digital pathology technology with a number of emerging products in virtual pathology training and online virtual tissue archiving including InView™ and PathXL™. These tools use virtual microscopy to facilitate training and education in pathology using diagnostic simulation and allow organizations to archive important microscopy resources for on-line access. Professor Hamilton has been an academic lead in this field for many years now and is currently Head of the Bioimaging and Informatics at Queen’s University Belfast. He has been leading research on computer vision and decision support in diagnostic cancer pathology and the identification of novel digital tissue and cell markers for diagnostics, prognostics and for predicting response to therapy in cancer. In addition he has developed novel approaches for the development of prognostic algorithms using methods such as case-based reasoning, neural networks and evolutionary algorithms. Approaches using Bayesian belief networks have led to the development of novel virtual training environments for pathology. Professor Hamilton has published extensively in this field and has been funded by government grants, cancer charities and industrial partners. He sits on the UK Medical Research Council Panel of Experts and on the management committees of a number of major medical research organizations including the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland and the International Society for Cellular Oncology.
Rebecca Little Senior Vice President, Medicity, Inc
Rebecca Little is a senior vice president with Medicity, Inc, an information technology firm, serving the healthcare industry with Web-based portal solutions, EHRs, and community-wide patient indexing solutions for hospitals, large physician groups, payers, commercial laboratories, and community-based health information exchanges. Ms. Little has served in various roles in the healthcare information technology field over the past 17 years. For the past 7 years, Ms. Little has held a variety of management roles for Medicity. In her current role as senior vice president of HIE market development, she leads the company’s efforts in the RHIO/HIE market segment. In addition, she led the team that successfully completed a six-year, extendable contract with the Delaware Health Information Network; the first state-wide clinical health information exchange and is currently working the California Regional Health Information Organization to secure the company’s second state-wide health information exchange.

Tab Edwards is a Consultant in the Hewlett-Packard Company’s Global Enterprise Business Unit, and has over 23 years of experience in various aspects of business and technology. This experience includes consulting, business planning and strategy development, business management, solution design, program management, and business development. In 2005, Tab was awarded the designation of Consultant - Master Level at HP, which is a designation given to only a small percentage of professionals at the company, and he earned his Six Sigma Green Belt certification for process improvement.
Prior to joining HP in 1996, Tab held a variety of positions that helped shape his business paradigm, including the oversight of 19 departments as a department manager for Gimbel Brothers, managing Fortune 500 accounts for the IBM Corporation, developing and implementing market development strategies for General Electric Company, and assisting companies ranging from SMBs to global enterprises in the development and execution of business strategies as a managing partner at the SMCC consultancy.
At HP, Tab has worked with enterprise customers in helping them better understand, articulate and clearly define their existing business problems, in addition to developing conceptual and actual solution designed to address the problems that were identified. As part of this overall process, Tab customarily works with the customer in the development of a comprehensive business case with the sole purpose of helping the company understand the degree of value to be derived from pursuing an identified potential solution to the problems that were uncovered.
Tab has written extensively on the topics of business strategy, sales, and distributed office output (for example, the problems associated with the creation, management and use of paper-based information), and is the author of two books, including Coffee Is For Closers Only! Baldur Johnsen has over 20 years of information technology experience, including systems development, network implementation, IT operations, and computer systems marketing and sales. Prior to joining HP, he has managed several IT hospital operations, first as head of IT for Reykjavik Hospital in Iceland and later became director of IT for Landspitali–University Hospital after the two hospitals merged. He has been on the Icelandic Healthcare Data Network project board since its conception in 2000. Baldur Johnsen holds a B.S. degree in computer science and a master's degree in business administration, both from the University of Iceland.
