The HP Mobile Device Management solution is part of the HP Service Delivery Platform (SDP). MDM allows operators, service providers, and handset manufacturers to remotely manage mobile devices. While the  capabilities of 3G mobile devices are becoming ever more sophisticated and integrated—with high-definition color screens, faster processors, built-in cameras, and integrated media players—they require flexible management to satisfy the needs of end-customers, service providers, network operators, and handset manufacturers.  HP along with best of breed device management partners Gemplus, InnoPath, and mFormation provide the following solution components that make up Mobile Device Management:

OTA (over-the-air) device provisioning—enables operators to remotely establish the appropriate settings based on services requested by subscriber and phone models. OTA device provisioning includes:

  • A large library of phones supported and settings per phone (e.g., WAP, GPRS, CSD, and MMS)
  • SS7 connectivity to bypass SMSC for bulk provisioning
  • A large number of SMSCs supported

OTA SIM—enables operators to remotely manage the information stored on the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM).

Campaign management—enables operators to schedule OTA device provisioning, OTA SIM, or a Firmware OTA campaign for specific phone models, and customer segments at a specific date and time.

Real-time firmware update—enables operators to manage software inventory on the phones and update a software stack remotely on handsets to address bugs or enable new functionalities.

Download component—enables operators to download new software and content to phones.

Automatic Device Detection—enables operators to track a handset’s installed base and make sure it has the correct inventory of SIM card (MSISDN) and phone models (IMEI) in its database:

  • Network based—by collecting appropriate data/signalling at specific network elements (e.g., SGSN, MSC, EIR, and HLR)
  • SIM/agent based—by having an applet on the SIM card or an agent on the phone to retrieve this  information and send it to the back-end Mobile Device Management server

Terminal capabilities repository—enables operators to have a deep knowledge of the terminal capabilities, for example, which services and content for a specific phone should be supported; and provide this information to other functional blocks where necessary (e.g., device rendering and MMS transcoding).

Mobile diagnostic—enables the call center representative to query the phone in real time, retrieve a rich set of phone and SIM information, spot any inconsistencies, and help subscribers correct or use their phones.

Mobile Service Quality Management—enables the operator to activate probes on the mobile devices to retrieve service quality information from an end-user perspective.
