Generic HP-UX platform notes

While the Globus Toolkit installation instructions apply to HP-UX, several general considerations are applicable across all HP-UX installations. You must follow the general HP-UX instructions below. In addition you must also follow the platform specific steps for either HP 9000 (PA-RISC) and Itanium®.

The general considerations for running the Globus Toolkit 2.x.x on HP-UX systems are as follows:

  • The HP Ansi-C compiler product must be installed (/opt/ansic).
  • If the $PATH environment variable includes GCC, the GPT and some package scripts will find that and attempt to use it. This will cause trouble when building with the vendorcc flavor builds of the toolkit. Also, if $PATH identifies a directory containing an MIT-compatible install program, the GPT will select that over its own install-sh. The result is that various scripts and files will be installed with incorrect permissions (e.g., non-executable). HP-UX installs a MIT-compatible install in /opt/imake/bin. So, be certain that neither GCC nor /opt/imake/bin is included in the $PATH variable.
  • In some circumstances, HP-UX does not define your $HOME environment variable (e.g., if you su root). When generating a key pair, if you see the error message:
       # grid-cert-request -service ldap -int -host host.dom.ain
        Using configuration from /etc/grid-security/globus-user-ssl.conf
error on line 6 of /etc/grid-security/globus-user-ssl.conf
        3438:error:0E065068:configuration file routines:STR_COPY:
           variable has no value:conf_def.c:595:line 6
Error number 1 was returned by
           /var/globus/obj/bin/openssl
Set your $HOME environment variable to / and try it again.
  • Ensure that the system process data size limit is at least 128MB. During the build, if the message "out of memory" shows up, the process data size limit is too small. Under HP-UX 11.x, the system-wide process data size limit can be queried/changed using kmtune(1M):
        # /usr/sbin/kmtune -l -q maxdsiz (get current data size)
        # /usr/sbin/kmtune -s maxdsiz=0x10000000 (raise to 256MB)

After making this change, a new kernel must be built/installed:
        # /usr/sbin/mk_kernel -o /stand/vmunix (rebuild kernel)
        # /etc/reboot (reboot system w/new kernel)

Alternately, the system administration manager sam(1M) can be used to make these changes on any HP-UX system.
  • Starting with Globus release 2.2.4, the grid-proxy-init command fails on all known HP-UX releases (through 11.22) with the message "ERROR: Couldn't create proxy certificate". This is due to OpenSSLs insistence on a random data source and the lack thereof on these systems. An easy work-around is to create a ".rnd" file in your home directory containing random data and set the $RANDFILE environment variable to point at it.
