This solution discusses best practices and performance data for backup and recovery of an ultra-large database in an Oracle 10g environment using HP Integrity Superdome, the HP XP12000, HP-UX, and Symantec NetBackup. Various methodologies were used for backup and recovery of a 24 terabyte database, including backup and restore with tape, and backup using Business Copy XP. The results of this testing demonstrated the following:

  • Superdome restore—2.66 TB/hr (restore of 24 TB took approximately 8 hours, 32 minutes)
  • Superdome backup—2.76 TB/hr (backup of 24 TB took approximately 8 hours, 20 minutes)
  • Virtual elimination of downtime by implementing Business Copy XP
