HP’s Edgeline Technology isn’t just a new kind of printer – it’s a new kind of printing. When HP began to develop Edgeline four years ago, the goal was to improve high performance, high volume printing. What they ended up with was a technology that changes the entire ink versus laser paradigm forever.
Engine of change
HP’s mastery of ink and laser printing technologies was the foundation for building a new kind of printing engine. Our goal was to combine the benefits of ink technology with the benefits of laser technology into a single print engine to provide customers with the best of both. It took over four years and a major commitment of HP’s engineering, material science, imaging science, and ink and media chemistry resources to develop a system that delivers ink’s highest colour quality and laser’s speed plus breakthroughs in reliability and operating costs. The result is HP Edgeline Technology.
Ink, laser…Edgeline
Part of any research and development process is overcoming challenges. Doing both ink and laser technologies one better meant addressing a wide variety of problems with innovative solutions.
- Challenge
- Reward
- Edgeline innovation
Need the colour gamut and thin film of an ink with laser toner’s rapid immobilisation on the paper’s surface.
- Best possible image quality
- Sharpness
- Optical density
- Colour saturation
Edgeline Technology is combined with advanced HP Vivera inks customised for each environment: plain paper for the office and photo media for photo printing applications. Transfer of ink to paper as the paper moves at a constant speed under the control of simple but very precise paper path mechanics.
- Speed, speed and more speed
Edgeline achieves page-wide ink-based print heads where the paper is moved and ink can be applied at a high speed. Precision intermittent paper motion traditional to ink-based printers leads to slower print speeds and lower quality printing.
- Reduced quality defects
- Improved speed
- Lower wear and tear on moving parts
Edgline printers move the paper, not the print heads, resulting in crisper, faster results.
Page-wide printheads
With page-wide printheads, there’s potential for paper to move under the printhead at up to 89 centimetres per second. First generation Edgeline Technology printers offer page printing speeds of up to twelve 4X6 photos or up to 71 A-size pages per minute. And in the future? You can expect to see speeds in excess of 100 A-size pages per minute.
The HP CM 8000 Series MFP with Edgeline Technology – Edgeline brought to fruition
The HP CM 8000 series boasts not only the newest Edgeline technology, but also a host of features that make it one of the most affordable, user-friendly workgroup printers on the market:
- Save up to 30 percent on the cost of colour per page compared to competitive colour department MFPs, with two-level colour usage-based pricing using Professional or General Office modes
- The Color Accent feature prices spot colour on a page (like the logo on corporate letterhead) at the black and white cost, not the colour cost
- High performance colour with monochrome reliability
- Color Access Control allows businesses to specify which kinds of documents or departments are permitted to print in colour
- Full size, color HP Easy Select control panel flattens the learning curve
- AutoNav jam removal guidance system makes clearing paper jams a snap with flashing indicator lights
The Edgeline Environmental Advantage
The HP CM 8000 Series meets the new requirements for ENERGY STAR® qualification. The CM 8000 series saves energy by entering the lowest power sleep mode – 50 watts – fifteen minutes after the end of a print job. Dropping to the lowest power sleep mode allows the MFP to save power during intermittent printing or copying.
Editor’s Choice
Both the CM 8050 and CM 8060 Color MFPs were awarded the Better Buys for Business Editor’s Choice Award in 2007. They sum up the Edgeline revolution neatly: “Breakthrough technology makes ink jet competitive on the departmental level.”
