The HP Sizer for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server is a complimentary planning resource that encapsulates knowledge gained from extensive performance characterization of SharePoint in the HP Solution Alliances Engineering performance labs, widespread collaboration between HP and Microsoft, and numerous SharePoint performance whitepapers produced by HP engineering. The tool offers a quick and consistent methodology for determining a "best-fit" server for individual needs, quick solution configuration comparisons, and a highly- detailed, customizable server and storage solution complete with bill of materials and pricing.
The tool solicits data or uses built-in defaults to determine optimal configurations based on SharePoint best-practices and supported growth paths. Selectable default configurations include entry level, highly available, and application optimized solutions. A "what if" feature allows rapid comparison of the effects of workload changes, platform and storage technology selection, etc., and it provides role-based server configurations, capacity utilization, and estimated network traffic. Users can select a configuration and then customize their environment by adding or substituting components within best-practice guidelines.
HP Sizer for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server also addresses one of the most critical areas of SharePoint server design: performance and capacity planning for the storage subsystem. The storage sizing and configuration capabilities offer detailed best-practice storage volume and RAID recommendations to support database and content storage needs using HP direct-attach storage, HP StorageWorks MSA or EVA Storage SAN solutions. V2.2 of the HP Sizer for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server enhances the Hyper-V virtualization component with added support for high-availability virtualized configurations. It leverages new 12, 24, and 32 core server models and provides easier allocation of Hyper-V VMs into host servers.
General V2 features include:
- Enhanced server and storage options for HP ProLiant G6 servers leveraging server-internal storage, direct-attached storage (DAS) and Storage Area Network (SAN) technologies
- Ability to size Hyper-V based virtualized solutions for SharePoint 2007
- Extended and enhanced data input options, including look-ahead results screens and improved network traffic estimates
- Country price list localization based on a user’s changeable country profile. (See Options menu -> Profile -> Country drop-down list). A new price list will be downloaded if needed.
- Full solution and individual component customization, including the ability to swap role servers within a server family (e.g. replace an HP ProLiant BL460c with a BL280c, or a DL380 with a DL360, etc.).
- A smart update utility to inform you or your customer of upgrades and new price lists and automatically download and apply them if desired
- Direct feed to HP R&D - a “Contact Us” button on the main screen allows users to email comments and suggestions directly to the HP Solution Alliances Engineering team
