The HP Modular I/O subsystem is a high-performance I/O subsystem that enhances the I/O throughput of NonStop S-series servers and allows them to attach to the HP StorageWorks XP enterprise storage subsystem, as well as future I/O peripherals. It is available with NonStop S76000 and later servers and requires the HP NonStop Kernel operating system Release Version Update (RVU) G06.24 or later.
The Modular I/O subsystem consists of the following components:
- Modular cabinet—a 42U high, industry-standard, 19-inch rack with front and rear doors and a brand new external appearance for mounting modular components. The cabinet comes equipped with two power distribution units (PDUs) with two power cables, which provide power outlets for the components within the cabinet, such as the I/O Adapter Module (IOAM) enclosure. It also includes vertical cable management and an extension to allow for mounting the PDUs without occupying additional U space.

- I/O Adapter Module (IOAM) enclosure—an 11U chassis that contains 10 slots for installing modular controllers such as the HP Fibre Channel ServerNet adapter (FCSA) and Gigabit Ethernet 4-port adapter (G4SA). The IOAM enclosure also contains two ServerNet switch boards that allow connection to modular ServerNet Expansion Boards (MSEBs) within a NonStop S-series cabinet, as well as four power supplies, four fans, a front bezel, and a cable management system. Up to three IOAM enclosures can be installed in a modular cabinet.

- Maintenance switch—a 1U Ethernet switch that provides the communication between the IOAM enclosure and the OSM console.

- Uninterruptible power supply (UPS)—a UPS is optional but recommended for the modular cabinet, where a site UPS is not available. The recommended UPS for use with the modular cabinet is the HP R5500 XR UPS.

- Extended Runtime Module (ERM)—the ERM provides extended battery runtime. The recommended configuration for modular cabinets with an HP R5500 XR UPS assumes that an ERM is also installed.
