HP Pathway with NonStop TS/MP software provides application server functionality that allows you to develop and deploy mission-critical online transaction processing (OLTP) applications on HP Integrity NonStop servers. Using this software, developers can concentrate on implementing business logic without being concerned with common application services such as load balancing, communications I/O, memory management, fault tolerance, and/or threading and scheduling. These common services are provided for you by Pathway with NonStop TS/MP application server software, comprising a run-time execution environment and a set of APIs. In this way, Pathway with NonStop TS/MP supplies a high-performance, highly available OLTP environment that is built in—rather than programmed in.

Important new features in Version 2.3
The latest release of Pathway with NonStop TS/MP software, Version 2.3, is available now and includes significant new features:

  • Pathway domains for planned outage elimination
  • Raised configuration limits
  • Further capacity increases
  • Other important user-requested enhancements

All new features in Version 2.3 are achieved without any special programming or changes to existing Pathway applications using previous software versions. With them, Pathway application developers can take full advantage of the increased power of Integrity NonStop servers. This combination of new software and hardware provides a continued growth path for Pathway users as well as unparalleled performance and availability for the most demanding mission-critical OLTP applications—Pathway for the 21st century.

Pathway domains for planned outage elimination
Pathway with NonStop TS/MP Version 2.3 software includes a powerful new feature called Pathway domains. Pathway domains enable you to configure multiple, identical Pathway environments (PATHMONs) that can behave as a single, large Pathway application. With the addition of Pathway domains, application availability is improved by eliminating planned outages. Any of the environments within a domain may be taken down in turn for reconfiguration, while the remaining environments within the domain continue processing work with no interruption. This enables online rebalancing of Pathway environments and prevents loss of service typically encountered whenever an update must be made to a running Pathway system.

  • Server classes are replicated across all environments in the domain.
  • Requests are transparently load-balanced across the domain by the Application Cluster Services (ACS) execution infrastructure.
  • You can manage the environments within a domain using a new single-user interface called the Pathway Domain Management interface.

Raised configuration limits
Adding Pathway domains to Pathway with NonStop TS/MP Version 2.3 software also effectively raises previous configuration limits. By replicating an application environment across a Pathway domain, the configuration limits of a single Pathway environment are removed. For example, the maximum number of server processes in a single Pathway environment is 4,095. If this environment is replicated twice across a Pathway domain, that limit is effectively doubled to 8,190. The maximum number of environments that may be included within a Pathway domain is four, so the configuration limits of a single Pathway environment may be increased by up to four times by using the Pathway domain feature.

Further capacity increases
Pathway with NonStop TS/MP Version 2.3 software significantly raises runtime limits compared with previous versions, enabling even greater exploitation of the increased capacity of Integrity NonStop servers.

  • Greater server link capacity per processor: Up from 1,750 to 4,095
  • More requesters per processor: Up from 1,024 to the limits of the processor
  • More concurrent sends per processor: Up from 1,600 to 4,045
  • More server classes per processor: Up from 1,024 to 4,045
  • More Pathway environments per processor: Up from 256 to 4,046

In addition, Pathway with NonStop TS/MP Version 2.3 employs a more efficient link management mechanism to help overcome link starvation and improve overall processor utilization.

Other important enhancements
Pathway with NonStop TS/MP Version 2.3 software also includes significant enhancements that have been requested by users.

  • A server class can now use all possible ASSIGN, DEFINE, and PARAM preallocated space within a PATHMON. For example, if the PATHMON ASSIGN limit is set to 1,000, then a server class will be able to reference 1,000 ASSIGNs in its configuration.
  • PATHMON preallocated space for ASSIGN, DEFINE, and PARAMs is increased to 8,096.
  • Wildcarding is now allowed on commands. For example, you can use STATUS TERM S-WDL* to get status on all TERMs having names starting with S-WDL.
  • Default security is changed from "N" to the more logical "O".

Ordering information
Pathway with NonStop TS/MP Version 2.3 product IDs are HSR53 and QSR53. Version 2.3 is supported on systems using RVU H06.06 and later and is available on SCOUT with Release Version Update (RVU) H06.14 or J06.03. This software is available upon request for systems licensed for Pathway with NonStop TS/MP Versions 2.0 and 2.1 at no additional charge. Note that the default version of NonStop TS/MP shipped with the Pathway with NonStop TS/MP product (HSR76/QSR76) will remain version 2.0. NonStop TS/MP Version 2.3 must be ordered and installed explicitly if required.
