Legislative summary
Director of Central Intelligence Directive 6/3 is entitled “Protecting Sensitive Compartmented Information within Information Systems.” This Directive establishes security policies and procedures for storing, processing and communicating classified intelligence information in information systems. The Directive covers any computer or telecommunications system, including software, firmware and hardware that are involved in the acquisition, storage, manipulation, management and control of sensitive compartmented data. The Directive applies to all information systems for United States government organizations, their commercial contractors and Allied governments ,used to process, store or communicate intelligence information.

The Directive requires that all of these agencies appropriately safeguard their information systems, implement appropriate security measure to protect the security of the systems and periodically certify and accredit their systems’ compliance with the requirements stated in an implementation manual associated with the Directive. The implementation manual provides uniform policy guidance and requirements for ensuring adequate protection of certain categories of intelligence information that is stored or processed on an information system.
