Legislative summary The California Online Privacy Protection Act (OPPA) was established in 2003 to require all businesses and owners of commercial websites in the state of California to conspicuously post and comply with a privacy policy that clearly states the policies on the collection, use and sharing of personal information. The policy identifies the categories of personally identifiable information collected about site visitors and the categories of third parties with whom the operator may share the information.
Any business, organization or individual that operates a website that collects private personal information for a person residing in the state of California is bound by the provisions of the law, so the California OPPA has a much greater impact nationally than is typical for state legislation.
