The Real Story about HP and Environmental Responsibility
Content starts here

supporting imageJune 2007:  IT departments are continually asked to reduce IT costs and increase service levels while building more adaptive infrastructures that effectively respond to changing business needs. Historically, companies added technology resources to respond to increased demands, resulting in inflexible, underutilized silos of IT infrastructure.

Virtualization helps your organization pool and share IT resources in a way that reduces costs, makes your IT infrastructures more flexible and assures supply automatically meets demand.

HP is a virtualization leader, consider the facts.

»  The Real Story about IBM BladeCenter with VFrame on InfiniBand

Fact 1: Virtualization is real and it’s big

  • IDC expects the server virtualization market to reach $20B by 20101
  • According to IDC, by 2010, virtualized servers will account for 15% of all server units, almost one third of total server revenue2
  • In a recent Yankee Group survey 84% of customers responded that they have already implemented Server Virtualization or will be doing so in the next 12 months3

Fact 2: HP is a global leader in x86 virtualization with HP ProLiant and ProLiant BL series server blades for HP BladeSystem

  • HP’s VMware business grew, faster than the industry wide VMware market.4
  • HP has more server models certified for VMware ESX 3.0 than any other vendor5

Fact 3: HP leads the industry in UNIX mission-critical virtualization with first-to-market innovations.

Industry analyst firm Illuminata says, “In recent years, both IBM and Sun Microsystems have aggressively developed and marketed virtualization in one form or another.  But it’s actually Hewlett-Packard that has been virtualizing Unix servers the longest, and that has the most diverse experience with deploying it in the field.”

Source Illuminata Research Note: HP's VSE Shows the Practical Side of Server Virtualization

  • HP realized nearly 120% growth of key virtualization technologies for Integrity in 1H07 (vs. the  same period last year)6
  • In UNIX virtualization, more than 60% of HP's mid-range and high end utilize HP virtualization technologies7
  • Some Industry-leading innovations:
       - Automated, goal-based workload management for UNIX (2000)
       - Electrically isolated hard partitions (nPars) and soft partitions (vPars) (2001)
       - HP Virtual Server Environment -Integrated partitioning, high availability, utility pricing and WLM (2003)
       - HP Integrity Essentials Capacity Advisor- Automated capacity planning for virtualized environments (2005)

Fact 4: HP is a leader in Storage virtualization

  • HP has sold over 30,000 virtual storage arrays8
  • HP StorageWorks flagship product, Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) grew 23% in FY’069
  • HP was the first systems vendor to have a virtualized disk array, HP AutoRAID in 1994

Fact 5: Intelligent control of enterprise data centers is a reality and made simple with HP’s unique unified management software.

  • While other vendors offer multiple management tools to manage your infrastructure, HP provides unified infrastructure management for controlling virtualized and physical environments from a single console, the HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM).
  • HP Virtual Server Environment for Integrity Servers, HP ProLiant Essentials and HP Insight Control software all plug into HP SIM and constitute the industry’s first and most robust integrated software family for planning, managing and automating virtual servers.10

Industry analyst firm Illuminata writes, "Tools such as HP's SIM ....show that it is possible to bring considerable consistency to managing a varied set of virtualization approaches and workload management techniques on a single system; managed environments need not be limited to a single operating system, architecture, or style of workload management.  It need not be all Microsoft, all VMware, or even all HP. Indeed, one of the major strengths of SIM's modular and extensible approach is that it aids integration of what is inevitable a somewhat disparate set of capabilities provided both from within HP and without."

Fact 6: HP virtualization customers are reaping quantifiable benefits today

  • HP customers have achieved improved business outcomes, using HP virtualization solutions:
       - The University of Utah achieved a 15:1 consolidation ratio, consolidating 150 physical servers onto 10 HP ProLiant BladeSystem servers, delivering 346% ROI over three years.
       - Mitel used the HP Virtual Server Environment for Integrity servers to more than double server utilization for  mission-critical SAP and Oracle applications; They also consolidated and virtualized their storage environment with HP Enterprise Virtual Arrays
  • HP customers can accelerate growth with HP virtualization solutions by deploying infrastructure in minutes rather than days or weeks or months and by streamlining problem resolution.
       - For Polaris Industries, their solution based on the HP ProLiant BladeSystem, VMware, and HP Virtualization Management allows them to deploy a system in a few minutes and has also reduced server deployment costs by 65%.
       - Florida’s Collier County Public Schools uses the HP Virtual Desktop Environment to efficiently deliver virtual desktops for its student computing environment.  With the Virtual Desktop solution, 95% of IT issues can be resolved remotely and instantaneously with one phone call
  • HP customers can mitigate risk with HP virtualization solutions by using virtualization to increase the quality of service that IT delivers to the business.
       - For Australia’s Central Queensland University, consolidating 70% of servers into an HP Enterprise Virtual Array-based SAN allowed the customer to dynamically provision storage from a central management console and increase systems availability by 3,500% percent, reducing recovery times from 18 hours to less than 30 minutes.
       - For German media giant Hubert Burda, the HP Virtual Server Environment and HP Integrity servers has driven the consolidation and centralization of IT while delivering higher service levels than ever before for over 3,000 users.
