Fact 1: Downtime, data loss, and security breaches can happen anywhere. And when they do, it affects both corporate reputations and your customers' experience. |
- A survey by Continuity Insights and KPMG[1] shows that over 50% of their respondents reported an interruption requiring activation of business recovery processes.
- A survey by EnvoyWorldWide[2] shows that about two-thirds of the respondents reported increased interest in their business continuity plans from their customers, and that the same number has seen specific requirements appearing in RFPs and RFIs.
- 93 percent of companies that suffer a significant data loss are out of business within five years.[3]

Fact 2: A mainframe is not necessarily the best option for business continuity and high availability needs. |
Because every customer's situation is unique, business continuity and high availability solutions must be based on specific needs and the business costs of an outage – and often newer technology holds the advantage. Effective recommendations start with careful evaluation of an organization's non-negotiable goals and requirements. It involves assessing their IT operational risk and potential impact of disruptions, assessing their ability to comply with regulatory requirements, and understanding their need for managing IT service levels. Finally, it means matching a customer's needs and budget with the right technology and service solutions, all while balancing costs against risk.
DH Brown reports, "The reality is that the majority of these environments may possess custom needs; one size does not fit all."4
HP recognizes that enterprises do not have the same business continuity requirements. HP's service practices and extensive server and storage product offerings embody that recognition.

Fact 3: Effective business continuity and high availability solutions include all elements in a tightly integrated solution: hardware, software, operating procedures, staff, and services. |
HP offers all elements of the solution -- from servers, storage, and networks to people, processes, and technology -- each based directly on your needs and your capabilities.
Fact 4: HP has a strong portfolio of Server and Storage solutions with proven reliability and availability capabilities. |
HP is a leader and innovator in building reliability into industry standard servers. The HP Integrity NonStop family now starts with "seven 9's" of availability "out of the box" -- the absolute highest levels in the industry.5 It's the first commercial server to scale to up to 4,080 Intel® Itanium® 2 processors. This new HP Integrity NonStop server also delivers 100 times the hardware reliability of previous NonStop systems (99.99999 versus 99.999 percent availability). In addition, a recent Standish Group report draws the logical conclusion that the HP Integrity NonStop servers will deliver better availability at approximately 1/2 the total cost of ownership (TCO) of the IBM zSeries Mainframe.6
HP Integrity Servers running OpenVMS and HP-UX are both optimized for mission critical environments. HP has over 25 years' experience providing scalable technologies for high availability, data replication, disaster recovery and continuity.
HP OpenVMS clustered systems, in addition, have run for years with no application down time, even while adding, upgrading, replacing and maintaining individual servers in the cluster. "It's quite normal for VMS cluster uptimes to be measured in years."7 User after user has verified this.
HP is an industry leader in clustering technology (indeed, HP invented clusters!).
Surveys of HP customers repeatedly show reliability as a key element of every ProLiant Server. One customer adds, "And, because ProLiant servers come with just about dual everything, we haven't actually experienced system failures – almost everything has a backup."8
HP StorageWorks products are the foundation of Data Protection and Disaster Tolerance solutions for business continuity and availability. The StorageWorks portfolio includes hardware, software and services that can protect and recover a simple small environment as well as a mission-critical data center.
Deploying traditional tape storage like the MSL, EML and ESL tape library families or the efficient integrated tape and disk solutions that include the MSA array family offers low-cost protection. With the addition of Data Protector Software, or HP OpenView Business Copy and Continuous Access on EVA and XP arrays, organizations can replicate their data locally, replicate remotely from site to site, and use clustering to keep their information protected and readily available.

HP can also manage your IT needs on your behalf. HP is listed in the "Leaders" quadrant of industry analyst firm Gartner Inc.'s 2005 evaluation of data center outsourcing service providers in North America.10
