April 2008 – Recently released updates to worldwide market share figures from IDC make a very compelling case for Hewlett-Packard’s leadership in storage. The latest IDC results are a strong indicator of the how much customer’s value HP storage offerings, since market share leadership demonstrates customers’ confidence in investing their valued money in HP storage based on the return-on-investment they will receive.
Consider these facts:

Fact 1: HP shipped more disk storage systems than any other vendor [1] |

According to IDC, HP shipped more disk storage systems than the next 5 competitors combined in Q407 with 42.5% market share; with over 8 consecutive quarters of leadership.
HP shipped more terabytes of disk storage systems than any other vendor—shipping over 358,000 TB of storage. In fact better than 1 out of every 5 TB of storage shipped worldwide is shipped by HP.

Fact 2: HP shipped more external disk storage systems than any other vendor [1] |

One out of every five external storage systems was shipped from HP, nearly 7 market share points higher than the nearest competitor; with over 8 consecutive quarters of leadership.
HP also shipped over 156,000 TB of external storage systems—over a 38% increase from last year.

Fact 4: HP shipped more tape drives and tape automation systems than any other vendor [2] |

In fact one out of every three tape drives and one out of every three tape automation units was shipped from HP! HP led the market in branded tape drives shipped—shipping 36% of all drives worldwide (10 points higher than its nearest competitor).[3] In the branded low-end tape drive shipments, HP grew market share by growing from 33% to 36% Q/Q—15 points from it’s nearest competitor.[4]
HP shipped the most tape automation systems during the period, shipping more than 1 out of every 3 automated tape systems; increasing its lead over the nearest competitor by almost 13 points![5]

Fact 5: HP worldwide total storage software grew over 3.5 times more than the market Q/Q [6] |

During Q407, HP storage software saw significant growth vs. the market Q/Q and solidifying its position as the 5th largest storage software vendor. Contributing to this growth was HP device management software that grew over 40% Q/Q, more than 23 times greater than the market grew and extending is lead as the 2nd largest storage software vendor for device management software.
HP also reclaimed sole ownership as the 4th largest storage management software vendor by growing nearly 5x the market Q/Q. Plus HP moved into the 5th largest storage software vendor position for data protection and recovery software growing nearly 3.5x greater than the market Q/Q.
