February 2009: IDC released a quarterly update to their Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, citing market share figures for the 4th calendar quarter of 2008 (4Q08).
Consider these telling facts: (Source: All of the following market share figures are for the 4th quarter (unless otherwise noted) and represent worldwide results as reported by the IDC Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, February 2009)

Fact 1: For the 27th consecutive quarter, more than 6.5 years, HP is the #1 vendor in worldwide server shipments. HP shipped more than 1 out of every 3 servers worldwide and captured 36.3 percent total unit shipment share. |

HP shipped over 230,000 more servers than #2 Dell.
HP shipped over 416,000 more servers than #3 IBM and 8.6 times as many as #4 Sun.
For the entire calendar year, 2008, HP grew more in server shipments than all other vendors combined (2.6 times more). |

Fact 2: HP extended the lead in the blade server market, with a 54.8% revenue share, and a 50.6% units growing faster than the market in both revenue and units. |

HP gained 5.5 points of revenue market share while IBM lost 9.7 points of revenue share to fall to 21.7%, 33.1 points behind HP.
HP gained 6.0 points of unit market share while IBM lost 8.4 points of share to fall to 25.3%, 26.2 points behind HP.
Dell is a distant third in blade units with 9.5% share and 8.2% revenue share. |

Fact 3: For the 50th consecutive quarter, 12.5 years, HP ProLiant is the x86 server market share leader in both factory revenue and units 1, shipping more than 1 out of every 3 servers in this market with a 37.3% unit share. |

HP’s x86 revenue share was 16.3 points higher than its nearest competitor, Dell.
HP gained 3.1 points of revenue share, year over year, while IBM lost 3.6
points of revenue share over the same period.

Fact 4: HP is the number 1 supplier of Itanium based systems based on worldwide unit volume and worldwide factory revenue. |

For the calendar year, 2008, HP’s Integrity server (including Integrity NonStop) revenue grew 20.5% year-over-year.
For the 4th quarter of 2008, HP’s Integrity server revenue was more than Sun’s SPARC revenue (UltraSPARC+SPARC64).

Fact 7: For the 3 major operating environments UNIX, Windows and Linux combined (representing 99.0% of all servers shipped worldwide); HP is number 1 worldwide in server unit shipment and revenue market share. |

HP holds a 36.3% unit market share worldwide, which is 2.5 times more than IBM’s unit market share and 8.5 times the unit share of Sun.
HP holds a 32.7% revenue market share worldwide which is 2.6 times the revenue share of Dell and 3.0 times the revenue share of Sun. |

Fact 8: For the 4th Quarter of 2008, HP outperformed the market in the following segments: total servers, blades, x86, RISC+EPIC, Windows, Linux and midrange UNIX in both revenue and units, as well as total UNIX unit shipments. |
