June 2008 — IDC released a quarterly update to their Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, citing market share figures for the 1st calendar quarter of 2008 (1Q08).
Consider these telling facts:

Fact 1: For the 24th consecutive quarter, 6 years, HP is the #1 vendor in worldwide server shipments. HP shipped 1 out of every 3 servers worldwide as HP captured 33.6 percent total unit shipment share. |

HP shipped over 165,000 more servers than #2 Dell.
HP shipped over 400,000 more servers than #3 IBM and 8.1 times as many as #4 Sun.

Fact 3: HP extended the lead in the blade server market, with a 46.9% revenue share, and a 49.9% units share taking share from both IBM and Dell. |

HP grew blade revenue 77.3%, year over year, gaining 6.2 points of revenue market share while IBM lost 5.0 points of revenue share over the same period.
HP grew blade units 54.3%, year over year, gaining 4.8 points of unit market share while IBM lost 5.8 points of share over the same period.
Dell a distant third in blade units and revenue lost 1.6 points unit share and lost 2.2 points revenue share, both year over year.

Fact 4: For the 47th consecutive quarter HP ProLiant is the x86 server market share leader in both factory revenue and units [1], shipping more than 1 out of every 3 servers in this market. |

HP’s x86 revenue share was 11.7 points higher than its nearest competitor, Dell.
HP remains the leading provider of AMD Opteron processor-based servers and server blades, with a 35.8% of factory revenue share.

Fact 7: HP is #1 in Linux® revenue and units. |

HP Linux server units and revenue grew faster than the overall Linux market.
With a commanding revenue share of 38.6%, HP gained 3.9 percentage points of Linux server revenue share, year-over-year, and now leads nearest competitor, IBM, by 18.6 percentage points.
HP shipped 12.4 times the number of Linux servers than Sun.

Fact 8: HP is #1 in high-end UNIX revenue share. |

HP’s high-end UNIX revenue grew 8 times faster than the overall market resulting in HP gaining 5.5 points of revenue share, year-over-year.

Fact 9: For the 3 major operating environments UNIX, Windows and Linux combined (representing 98.4% of all servers shipped worldwide); HP is number 1 worldwide in server unit shipment and revenue market share. |

HP holds a 33.6% unit market share worldwide, which is 2.5 times more than IBM’s unit market share and 8.0 times the unit share of Sun.
HP holds a 33.1% revenue market share worldwide which is 2.3 times the revenue share of Dell and 2.6 times the revenue share of Sun.
36.0% of IBM’s worldwide revenue market share comes from their proprietary legacy mainframe line (System z Platform) and System i.
